China's Antarctic scientific research station 'Xuelong-3' officially launched
After years of careful preparation and construction, China's fifth Antarctic scientific research station, Xuelong-3, was officially declared operational on October 1, 2024
The "Xuelong-3" scientific research station is located in the northeast of the Antarctic Peninsula, with a superior geographical location, which facilitates various scientific research activities such as glacier change monitoring, marine biodiversity investigation, and astronomical observation. The site is equipped with world-class laboratory facilities, including meteorological observation stations, seawater chemical analysis rooms, ecological monitoring centers, etc., aiming to comprehensively enhance China's scientific research capabilities in the Antarctic region.
In order to minimize its impact on the fragile environment of Antarctica, Snow Dragon III has adopted multiple green environmental protection technologies. Its architectural design follows the principle of extremely low energy consumption, utilizing efficient insulation materials and solar power supply systems, significantly reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions during operation. In addition, the scientific research station is equipped with wastewater recycling and reuse devices to ensure that all domestic sewage is effectively purified and does not burden the surrounding natural environment.
Adhering to the concept of openness and sharing, "Snow Dragon III" welcomes scientists from all over the world to participate in scientific research projects and enhance understanding of Antarctica and its surrounding waters through joint research. The Chinese Antarctic research team stated that they will regularly hold international academic exchange conferences and provide necessary logistical support to encourage international research teams to engage in interdisciplinary cooperation and jointly promote the development of polar science research.
