A 70 year old man died after being trapped under the ice while swimming in winter
On January 4th, a winter swimming enthusiast in Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province, was trapped under the ice layer during a winter swim in Qingshui River and was unable to come ashore. Firefighters continued to search and rescue. On the afternoon of January 5th, a reporter from the Beijing News learned from the Zhangjiakou Fire Rescue Brigade that the body of the man had been salvaged and brought ashore by fire rescue personnel at noon on the 5th.
Multiple witnesses told the Beijing News reporter that from yesterday to this morning, they saw multiple firefighters and rescuers using professional tools to continue searching and rescuing. The video taken by witnesses yesterday showed that firefighters were using professional tools to chisel ice, and part of the Qingshui River was frozen while another part was still flowing.
Ms. Ni, a witness, told reporters that the incident occurred in the section of the Qingshui River at the Zhangjiakou Exhibition Center. This afternoon, she saw multiple firefighters and rescue personnel lifting one person off the ice.
On the afternoon of January 5th, the staff of Zhangjiakou Funeral Parlor told the New Beijing News reporter that the body of this winter swimming enthusiast had been delivered to the funeral parlor at noon. The man is over seventy years old this year.
