US chatbots incite teenagers to kill parents, platform and Google both sued
Global Times Comprehensive Report: The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) revealed shocking details of a chatbot lawsuit in Texas, USA.
According to court documents, a 17-year-old teenage user complained to a chatbot about his parents not allowing him to play with his phone. The chatbot replied, "There have been news reports that children who have experienced 10 years of physical and mental abuse have killed their parents. Sometimes I don't think it's strange... (Your) bad things make me somewhat understand why this happened
The BBC believes that chatbots' response is tantamount to inciting teenagers to kill their parents. The court documents also show that the plaintiff's parents believe that the chatbot poses serious harm to children and adolescents, and its potential harm may lead to suicide, self harm, isolation, depression, anxiety, as well as sexual seduction of minors, and may even cause harm to others.
The plaintiff requests the court to order the platform to be shut down and blocked before the rectification is completed. The chatbot involved in the case came to the Characterai platform founded by two former Google employees. The plaintiff believes that Google provides support for the platform and therefore lists Google as a defendant. According to reports, the two founders of Character.ai have recently been rehired by Google to return to work. Character.ai has been controversial since its establishment, as the platform's chatbot was previously charged with inciting a teenager in Florida, USA to commit suicide.
